MorningStar Mission

MorningStar Mission relieves the spiritual and physical hunger of the poor by providing food for the hungry, clothing for the needy and shelter for the homeless. Since 1909, MorningStar Mission has served men, women, children and entire families in Joliet and Will County, offering hope for the hurting through both one-time meals and long-term recovery programs.

The Barnes Foundation was delighted to be a part of MorningStar Mission’s Holiday Food Basket and Stars Gift Program during the 2013 Christmas season. We assisted them with providing food baskets and gifts to more than 400 needy families right here in our community. We made a monetary donation and also spent a day helping to distributing the baskets and gifts. We were inspired by the joy that programs like these bring to the community and felt lucky to be a part of it.

The Bridge Teen Center

The Bridge Teen Center in Orland Park is an innovative grassroots nonprofit community center that was designed around the interests and needs of teens in the Chicago suburbs. They serve teens and families from all over the Chicago Southland and Northwest Indiana areas with a mission to provide free programs during after-school and unsupervised hours that allow students to develop mentally, physically, emotionally and spiritually in a safe environment.

The center offers many wonderful free programs to junior high and high school students and we have been fortunate enough to host some of them. A friend of the Barnes Foundation who also happens to be a wonderful chef has done demonstrations for the kids focusing on healthy snacking. One demonstration was on gluten-free cooking and included information on why people choose to eliminate gluten from their diets as well as fun recipes to try. The second was a course on healthy Halloween snacking. During these demonstrations, the students are able to get involved with the presentation, help create recipes and of course enjoy the treats. We really enjoy the time we spend there and seeing the dedication and creativity of the people who work and volunteer to make it a wonderful place for teens.

Santa's Kids Drive

In December of 2011, the Barnes Foundation donated $1,500 to Dreams for Kids. We also dontated $1,500 to the Children's Memorial Hospital "Heroes for Life" Campaign.

The funds for these donations were raised by employees of Professional Medical, Inc. Each month, ProMed employees have the option of participating in "Jean Fridays" and donating $5 in order to wear jeans to work on Fridays. The employees then donate the money that is raised to the Barnes Foundation to use in their charitable efforts.
